Germany’s Global Responsibility
Interim Result of the Membership in the UN Security Council

The United Nations Association of Germany and the Global Perspectives Initiative invite you to the evening discussion on “Germany’s global Responsibility – Interim Result of the Membership in the UN Security Council”. Together with Ambassador Christoph Heusgen, Franziska Brantner and other experts, we will take stock of Germany’s membership in the UN Security Council. The discussion will be moderated by Elisabeth Niejahr, chief reporter of Wirtschaftswoche.
Since January 2019, Germany is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and chaired the Council in April 2019. More political participation for women and better protection against sexual violence in conflict regions are the main foci of Germany’s membership.
Following extensive negotiations, the Security Council adopted Resolution 2467 on the protection against sexual violence in conflict zones on 23 April, which was introduced by Germany. Through this initiative, the Federal Government reaffirmed the importance of the Women, Peace and Security agenda as a core concern of Germany at the United Nations. Since then, the implementation and political consequences of Resolution 2467 are subjects of intensive debates.
We want to reflect upon Germany’s engagement in the Security Council and discuss how the Federal Government can demonstrate global responsibility and strengthen the role of women as peacekeepers and protect them in times of conflict.
