How can migration become a Win-Win for Africa and Germany?

A parliamentary breakfast with MP Christoph Matschie

The Global Perspectives Initiative (GPI) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), together with Christoph Matschie, Member of Parliament, Deputy Foreign Policy Spokesman and Head of the Africa Working Group of the SPD Parliamentary Group, are organizing a parliamentary breakfast to present our paper “Jobs or Migration? An African Perspective”.

The Skilled Worker Immigration Act will enter into force on 1 March 2020 and is an important step towards enabling immigration from Africa within a legal framework. In the course of this, answers to urgent questions must be found:

  • How should legal and safe migration from Africa to Europe be organised?
  • How can labour market development in Africa be promoted in order to offer people a future perspective in their home countries?
  • What opportunities does Africa’s growing population offer for the continent’s economic progress?

We have addressed these and other questions in a joint policy paper with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, the African Institute for Development Policy and the IOM. We will discuss the results and explore ways of shaping German policy with selected Members of Parliament.

Speakers:

  • Christoph Matschie, Member of Parliament, Deputy Foreign Policy Spokesman and Head of the Africa working group of the SPD Parliamentary Group

Moderation:

  • Dr Ingrid Hamm, Co-Founder and CEO Global Perspectives Initiative
