How can migration become a Win-Win for Africa and Germany?

The Skilled Worker Immigration Act will come into force on 1 March 2020 and is an important step towards enabling immigration from Africa within a legal framework. To this end, we need a German-African dialogue at eye level, for example on the following issues:

  • How can labour market development in Africa be promoted in order to offer people a future perspective in their home country?
  • What kind of economic progress do we need to employ Africa’s growing young population?
  • What should a comprehensive framework for regulated and safe migration from Africa to Europe look like?

We have explored these and other questions in our paper with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, the African Institute for Development Policy and the Global Migration Data Analysis Centre of the IOM.

The paper is based on the Governance Weekend of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation in April 2019 in Abidjan and the resulting conference “Jobs or Migration? An African Perspective” of the Global Perspectives Initiative in November 2019 in Berlin, where more than 20 high-ranking African and European decision-makers discussed facts about migration in Africa and from Africa to Europe as well as possible solutions for both continents with about 150 guests.

We are particularly looking forward to discussing the results with high-ranking panelists following the official presentation.

  • Maureen Achieng, Chief of Mission International Organisation for Migration Ethiopia
  • Nathalie Delapalme, CEO Mo Ibrahim Foundation
