Immunization Works: Improving Child Survival through Multilateral Action

With Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Due to the current developments concerning COVID-19 the event is postponed for an undetermined time.

In 2020, 415 million children worldwide live in fragile environments or in conflict zones, causing high risks of illness and acute malnutrition. In addition to adequate and healthy nutrition, vaccinations are one of the most successful and cost-effective health measures. Multilateral development cooperation instruments such as the Gavi Vaccine Alliance make a lasting contribution to the social and economic development of their partner countries and to global poverty reduction.

Since its foundation in 2000, Gavi and its partners have immunized more than 760 million children and protected over 13 million lives. The mortality rate for children under five years has decreased by 50% worldwide. We are honored to have Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Board Chair of Gavi and former Finance Minister of Nigeria) as keynote speaker at a high-level discussion with Jakob von Weizsäcker (Chief Policy Officer, German Ministry of Finance) and Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven (Director-General Global Issues, German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development) on 31 March in Berlin.

Joined by one of this year’s Gavi Community Champions, our panelists are going to discuss the importance of Germany’s sustainable commitment to Gavi as a means of providing safe and healthy futures for our next generations, and for ensuring that no one is left behind when implementing the Sustainable Development Goals until 2030.
