Best Practice between sustainable and profitable business activity

Child labour on West African cocoa plantations, dehumanising working conditions in Asian sweatshops and the application of pesticides are some of several problems that affect the environment and millions of people worldwide. In order to increase sustainable production- and working conditions in Sub-Sahara Africa, GPI brings together company representatives, political actors, civil society organisations and media representatives. By doing so, opportunities for sustainable value chains will be examined – and other economic sectors inspired to become engaged as social entrepreneurs. Of particular importance will be how international value chains and corporate responsibility can be fair and environmentally friendly across national borders. We are delighted to announce Prof. Michael Otto, chairman of the board of the Otto Group, as our speaker. Since the 1970’s Prof. Michael Otto has been engaged in creating fair working conditions and a sustainable production environment in the textile sector, especially through the initiative Cotton made in Africa (CMIA).
The GP Salon is part of the series on “Economy as part of the solution” and is organised by Global Perspectives Initiative (GPI) in cooperation with the Ministry on Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federation of German Industries (BDI).

- Prof. Michael Otto, Chairman of the Board Otto Group
