The Africa Roundtable: May 2022
Recovery, Preparedness and Resilience in Times of Crises

With 35 selected experts from business, politics and civil society, the topics of Recovery, Preparedness and Resilience in Times of Crises were discussed at The Africa Roundtable in Berlin on May 12, 2022. In times of multiple crises, it is more important than ever to come together as cooperation is the only way forward. Guests agreed that getting into action is crucial.
For Africa’s post-Covid economic recovery, private investment is needed, which requires backing from the public sector or development banks. Special Drawing Rights for African countries were highlighted several times as an important aspect. Simultaneously, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has increased international attention to Global Health, with health system strengthening on the African continent remaining critical.
To address these various economic, financial and health challenges in a sustainable and collaborative manner, the two continents must work even more closely together. One point of discussion was the reform of multilateral organizations and a possible seat for the African Union within the G20, like the one held by the European Union.
The Africa Roundtable was supported by renowned partners such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Deutsche Welle and brand eins magazine.
