US Elections 2020: Implications for Multilateralism and the Global South

mit Gayle E. Smith & Michael Werz

The upcoming election is of huge importance – not only for the United States, but for the entire world. Although hopes are pinned on Joe Biden, it is not yet possible to make any reliable forecasts on the outcome of the election.

Donald Trump made a strong statement on Global Collaboration when leaving the World Health Organization during a global crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. We will discuss the expected implications of both scenarios – a re-election of Donald Trump or a win of Joe Biden – regarding pressing topics of:

  • Multilateralism and its institutions
  • Peace and Security
  • Racism and Inequality
  • Development of the Global South.

We asked two prominent figures to discuss the US election in this regards in our GP Salon: Gayle E. SmithPresident and CEO of the ONE Campaign, who served as top advisor on development issues for two American presidents and can give valuable insights on the elections’ consequences for both the United States and the African continent; and Michael WerzSenior Fellow at Centre for American Progress and Mercator Senior Fellow (2020-2021) and highly acknowledged expert on US foreign policy in German media and politics.

The discussion will be moderated by Dr. David Deißner, CEO of Atlantik-Brücke.
