How to Ensure a Just Distribution of Vaccines
Circle: Boosting African Healthcare
April 22, 2020
online / Zoom
with Dr. Seth Berkley
Resilient health systems are crucial for detecting and containing new pathogens at an early stage. Vaccines play a central role—they improve public health and support stable economic development. However, the high cost of procurement is a major challenge for many African countries.
For 20 years, the Vaccine Alliance Gavi has been working to ensure fairer access to vaccines and has saved over 13 million lives in that time. Looking at this year’s pledging conference, we spoke to Dr Seth Berkley, Gavi’s CEO, about donor countries’ responsibilities, the fair distribution of a future coronavirus vaccine, and strengthening African health systems.
