The Commission “A Changing World – Germany and the Global South” released its final report with recommendations in late May, offering recommendations on how Germany should engage with countries in the Global South. At our Global Perspectives Salon during the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2025, experts from politics, business, and development sectors came together to explore how Germany can translate these proposals into more effective and strategic partnerships while maintaining trust.
The discussion focused on the steps that the new German government must take at national, European and international levels to turn the Commission’s recommendations into concrete policy initiatives. Key themes included forming new partnerships to address global issues such as climate change, security and limited resources; making better use of financial resources; engaging the private sector; and the pressing requirement to reform the multilateral system. Participants agreed that what is needed now is political courage and a real commitment to action to turn these recommendations into policy.
