Over the last 20 years, the fight against AIDS and HIV has seen steady progress: the number of new infections decreased continuously, and a greater number of people with HIV gained access to life-saving treatment. However, the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to blowing the hard-won progress further off course: Lockdowns, interrupted supply chains and overburdened health care systems prevent people from accessing medication and testing devices. HIV programs are facing challenges on a global scale. Adequately responding to these challenges and consequences requires the world to take decisive action now.
Together with ONE Germany, Global Perspectives Initiative held a press briefing with Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, Peter Sands, Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and Dr Zolelwa Sifumba, physician and activist from South Africa to talk about the challenge of HIV and AIDS during a pandemic.
