Empowering Women in Conflicts
Conference: Survivors and Agents of Change
April 18, 2022
Women are often affected by violence and exploitation in conflict situations and suffer particularly from the destruction of social structures and livelihoods. Although internationally condemned, sexual violence continues to be used as a weapon of war worldwide. Julienne Lusenge was awarded the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity last year for her courageous commitment to women’s rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In cooperation with the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative and ESMT Berlin, Global Perspectives organized a panel discussion and subsequent reception with Lusenge.

Survivors and Agents of Change
Giving future generations a chance for peace
Violence is not a problem specific to the Global South, but a phenomenon of war and conflict. Katja Keul, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, pointed out the importance of information for those affected and the documentation of violence, without which the prosecution of perpetrators would be practically impossible. The international community must come together and break existing cycles of violence in conflict situations to give future generations a chance for peace.
