25 years ago, the launch of the ‘Beijing Platform for Action’ was an important milestone for gender equality. It aimed at empowering women and girls worldwide. However, to date, no country has fully implemented the commitments made at that time. Therefore, the world is still far from achieving true equality.
The benefits of fostering equality and diversity are obvious: equality does not only advance justice, it also promotes economic progress. Studies show that diverse societies are more productive and create better prospects for future generations. The pandemic has set back many of these achievements. However, this also presents an opportunity: if women play a central role in the economic recovery, global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could increase by up to 16 percent by 2030, according to McKinsey.
As the largest initiative for equality to date, the Generation Equality Forum 2021 is sending a powerful message. Governments, companies and foundations will convene in Paris next year to develop concrete measures for implementation.
In this context, we spoke with decision-makers from Germany and African countries: What are their expectations of German politics? And what does fair, inclusive economic growth look like in practice?
